The future of the construction industry will once again be in the operator’s seat Thursday, April 11, for the return of the annual Heavy Metal Rocks. This year’s course offers the most variety of equipment for students to try out.

Dawson Construction and Dawson Civil are proud to be major supporters of this event. Among the 50 pieces of equipment in action, Dawson Construction will have a paver, roller and a few employees on hand to help teach high school students. Dawson Civil is excited to send a few instructors to the event to teach the students about operating rollers, packers and excavators. Instructors will connect on an individual basis with each student, revealing the tricks of each trade. Occasionally, Dawson has hired students that previously attended Heavy Metal Rocks, and as was the case last year, even helped instruct at this event.

“I’ve been involved with this event for many years and it never disappoints. I love having these kids on the equipment, seeing what they like and getting a sense for what they might want to do as a career one day. I’m proud that we have created this opportunity for students and I am glad to see how well it has been received by the community after all these years,” said Brad Gerow, Equipment Coordinator with Dawson Group. “Our industry believes in this program and we are all excited to work with the next generation of operators.”

The 16th installment of Heavy Metal Rocks begins its tour through the Interior at the Tk’emlups Indian Band Pit for three days of learning from veterans within the industry. More than 30 high school students from School District No. 73 have interviewed and been accepted, along with completing their Construction Site Safety, WHMIS and First-Aid courses.

Later on in the Heavy Metal Rocks schedule, Dawson Road Maintenance will get the chance to work with students from both Williams Lake and 100 Mile House locations in April and May.
